For our english Friends:
So far, I've only read that to replace the gearshift lever / shifting knob, the entire gearshift housing has to be removed/loosened, or that you can only access the gearshift lever's locknut by fiddling around with it, from the front using a cut-off (in my case) 15mm open-end wrench.
On the C126, it's difficult to remove the gearshift housing anyway, as the air ducts cover the screws.
It's easier if you squeeze the four plastic tabs of the shift cover together and pry the shift cover off the gearshift housing.
To do this, first pry the plastic clips facing forward on both sides.
Now, press in the outer plastic tabs with a screwdriver or your finger and secure them with toothpicks by inserting the toothpicks from the front into a gap between the plastic tab and the housing while bending the plastic tabs inwards.
You can see this well with a small telescope mirror.
Apply gentle upward pressure to the shift lever cover and, for example, use a dental hook to release
the two internal plastic tabs.
Then pull the tab of the Economy/Standard connector in the direction of travel to disconnect it.
Now you can lift off the shift lever cover, light rail, and rubber boot to easily access the shift lever's locknut.
Removing the shift lever is also possible without removing the shift lever cover, but
when installing the shift lever, you'll unfortunately be annoyed by the shift lever mount,
which is spring-loaded and always veers to the left (towards the right).
I used to wedge a piece of wood in there to keep the shift lever mount centered,
but then trying to screw in the fine thread of the shift lever without damaging it is a real pain...
It's much easier with the shift lever cover installed...
